Tropical Storm Rene forms in the Atlantic, earliest “R-named” storm

MIAMI — Tropical Storm Rene has formed in the Atlantic Monday evening, according to the National Hurricane Center (NHC).

Rene is the earliest “R-named” storm in what has been a record-setting hurricane season.

Rene is expected to deliver tropical-storm-force winds and heavy rain to the Cabo Verde Islands through Tuesday morning, NHC says.

According to the 5 p.m. update, Rene is about 115 miles east of the Cabo Verde Islands and is packing 40 mph winds, according to NHC. Rene is moving west-northwest at 12 mph, NHC says.
