St. Petersburg Police to present $6.7 million proposal to city council for 500 body cameras

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — At Thursday’s St. Petersburg City Council meeting, the police department plans to accept a 5-year proposal for equipment like body cameras after months of calls for transparency from the community.The proposal is for $6,756,188 and includes 500 body cameras, 450 in-vehicle cameras, and a cloud-based digital evidence management system with unlimited storage.According to city documents, the in-vehicle cameras will be permanently mounted in police officers’ vehicles.The body cameras have weapons pull automatic activation and provide a real-time remote view of body cam images.Police Chief Anthony Holloway has said he wants this to strengthen transparency between officers and the community.If approved, the contract would start November 1 and end October 31, 2025.
