Patient Information Stolen from Moffitt Cancer Center Doctor

The stolen information is both personal and sensitive, according to Moffitt Cancer Center. It details the health and demographics of approximately 4,000 patients, and it was stolen on July 2 from one of the center’s physicians.

The drives were in a briefcase that was taken from the physician’s car, when it was broken into.

“Moffitt immediately began an investigation and has no indication that the information was viewed or misused,” Moffitt Cancer Center wrote in a notice to patients on its website. “This information includes patient names, dates of birth, medical record numbers and/or limited information regarding the nature of services received at Moffitt. Social Security numbers and financial information were not included.

Moffitt says affected patients were notified on September 2 and urged to review and verify all services on statements from their medical providers. The cancer center is now “providing additional education to all team members and refining its auto-encryption processes to better secure patient information.”

The patients whose information was stolen received care through Moffitt’s Blood and Marrow Transplant Department.

Anyone who believes they were impacted can call 1-888-253-7598.
