BRADENTON, Fla. — Students at Manatee Elementary School can now take a trip to the doctor without having to leave their school campus.
The new School Based Health Center is the first of its kind in Manatee County. There will be a doctor staffed on the campus that can perform physicals, conduct sick visits, write prescriptions and administer vaccines.

In addition, vision, dental, and mental health services are offered at the clinic.
The health center is made up of three classroom buildings that have been placed near the school’s playground.
One of the buildings has been outfitted as a pediatric doctors office; the second is a facility for mental health counseling; and the third is a clinic for parents and residents.
“Not only are we focused on the child being successful but the whole comprehensive community, which is lifting everyone up in the family unit,” explained Cynthia Saunders, Superintendent of the School District of Manatee County.

The idea is that by offering these services to students who may not otherwise get them, they will have improved GPAs, attendance, and reduced rates of suspension.
The health center is open to all students, parents, and community members.
It is funded primarily through a state grant, while the school district has provided the classroom and some staff members.
