Local school districts try to get more COVID-19 cleaning supplies, set to ask for grant money

PINELLAS COUNTY, Fla. — Two local school districts are meeting on Tuesday and plan to request more money for cleaning supplies. The Pinellas County School Board is set to ask for approval to apply for the CARES Act, Coronavirus Prevention and Response (Sanitation & Cleaning) Grant.The district will ask for $1,163,304.The school board says it wants to provide essential resources to maintain a safe and healthy environment in schools during the pandemic.Leaders say this will help with the increased costs needed to improve cleaning procedures.The majority of the money would be used on cleaning and sanitation supplies. The rest of the funding would go towards janitorial services, hand sanitizing stations, and fogger machines.The Manatee County School Board is also meeting on Tuesday and requesting money from the same grant.Leaders there say they need $570,096 to keep students, staff, and teachers safe.They also plan to use the money on cleaning supplies and items like face shields.
