“Derrick Adams: Buoyant” at the MFA, St. Petersburg

“Derrick Adams: Buoyant” includes 12 largescale paintings of Black men, women and children floating in bright, blue water with fun, colorful pool floaties. In the gallery, there are beach chairs and giant pool floats hanging from the ceiling, along with one of the inspirations for the idea of the show: a 1967 Ebony magazine article and photo spread showing Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on vacation in Jamaica.
