City council approves St. Petersburg Police Department’s proposal for 500 body cameras

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — St. Pete police officers will soon be getting body cameras. The City Council approved the money to buy 500 cameras for officers, which are more than enough for the entire police force.RELATED: St. Petersburg Police to present $6.7 million proposal to city council for 500 body camerasAccording to city documents, the in-vehicle cameras will be permanently mounted in police officers’ vehicles.Officers have tested several body cameras in recent months. The body cameras have weapons pull automatic activation and provide a real-time remote view of body cam images.Police Chief Anthony Holloway has said he wants this to strengthen transparency between officers and the community.If approved, the contract would start November 1 and end October 31, 2025.
