ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Hurricane Isaias is approaching Andros island in the northwestern Bahamas.
The hurricane has maximum sustained wind of 85 mph. Those strongest winds are to the east of the center.
The hurricane, although strong, has a ragged appearance on satellite imagery this morning.
What You Need To Know
- Hurricane Warning for part of Florida east coast
It has come into the area where a strong SW wind shear is acting on it and some dry air has wrapped into the circulation. There isn’t much further opportunity for strengthening.
In fact, most of the computer models show a phase of weakening beginning with tonight and continuing tomorrow as Isaias rides parallel to the East Coast of Florida.
Even though a Hurricane Warning is in effect for parts of SE Florida and a Hurricane Watch is in place for parts of the east coast, there is only a small chance for hurricane conditions.
Much of the East Coast from Boca Raton northward will certainly see strong tropical storm conditions beginning overnight tonight and continuing into most of Sunday as the storm moves northward.
We still see few impacts for the Tampa Bay area this weekend.
Winds will pick up and it will become breezy. There is only a slight chance of rain today with occasional gusty showers likely on Sunday. Winds in Eastern Polk County could gusty to tropical storm force (40 mph) from Saturday night into Sunday.
Due to the drier west side of this hurricane and the rapid movement, heavy rain should not be a problem on our side of the state.
But persistent rain bands coming ashore could bring heavy rain to the Atlantic side. .
