Almost all of Florida in the Forecast Cone for a Potential Hurricane

TAMPA, Fla. — Tropical Depression 13 has not gained strength as of the 8 p.m. advisory, but it is expected to get its act together.

The forecast still calls for a steady strengthening into a tropical storm and then a hurricane.

Almost all of Florida is now in the forecast cone of uncertainty, meaning the center of a named tropical system could make landfall somewhere in the Sunshine State.

At 8 p.m. Thursday, TD-13’s windspeeds remained at 35 mph. Forecasters still believe a category one hurricane could pass very close to or directly impact a Florida coastline, and it has the potential to be in Gulf of Mexico by Tuesday.

Almost all of Florida is currently in the cone of uncertainty.

Conditions appear favorable for a strengthening system, depending on land interaction, later in the forecast.

Intensification faster than is shown on the official forecast cone is a possibility.

It’s not near any land now but it’s expected to be near the northern Leeward Islands by Friday night then move near the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico this weekend.Persons in Florida should closely monitor the progress of this system through the weekend and into next week.

Meanwhile, Tropical Depression 14 has formed in the Caribbean. The tropical wave we’ve been following has developed a closed circulation. Recon is scheduled to investigate it this afternoon.

Conditions appear to be very favorable for strengthening in the Western Caribbean in a few days. After that, the system will encounter more wind shear but we are still unsure how all of these factors are going to play into the forecast.

This system could very well be a hurricane as it approaches the Yucatan Peninsula in a few days.
